Khajuraho

The Khajuraho is a place in the Chhatarpur district of Madhya Pradesh which is famous for its temples and is located close to Bagheshwar dham. Khajuraho has a group of Hindu and Jain temples. 

The temples of Khajuraho are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temples are built in Nagara-style architecture and are a symbol of great architectural design.

Most of the temples in Khajuraho were built between 950 and 1050 by the rulers of the Chandela dynasty.

According to the historical records Khajuraho temple site had about 85 temples by the 12th century spread over an area of 20 sq. km but as of now only around 25 temples still survive spread over an area of 6 sq. km.

The Kandariya Mahadeva Temple is one of the most prominent temples in Khajuraho and is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Another Famous temple is the Chaturbhuj Temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu.

Bhimkund

Bhimkund is a natural water source and a holy place located near the Bajna village in Chhatarpur, Madhya Pradesh.

There are mainly two stories related to Bhimkund.

The origin of Bhimkund dates from the era of the Mahabharata. The water of the kund (tank) is so clean and transparent that one can see fish swimming in the water clearly.

There is a story behind the origin of Bhimkund from the Mahabharata associated with the Pandavas. According to the story, once Draupadi fainted of thirst because of the scorching sun, then Bhim who was the strongest of all the 5 Pandavas hit the ground with his gada and water came out from the ground which led to the formation of this pool and since this Kund came into being because of Bhim that is why it is called Bhimkund.

It is told that Bhim struck the roof of the cave with his gada, which left a small opening just above the kund.

According to another legend, the Vedic sage Narada sang the Gandharva Gaanam, a celestial melody, in honour of Lord Vishnu. Vishnu, pleased by Narada’s devotion, emerged from the kund, causing the water to take on a blue hue due to Vishnu’s dark complexion. That’s why Bhimkund is also called Narad Kund.

Since the water in this kund appears blue in colour it is also called Neel Kund.

The true depth of this water reservoir remains a mystery, shrouded in legend.

Jatashankar Temple

Jatashankar Dham Temple is a hindu shrine located in Bijawar tehsil of District Chhatarpur, Madhya Pradesh, India.

This place is also known as “Kedarnath of Bundelkhand”. This temple has a very big and majestic statue of Lord Shiva.

The temple has a symbolic “Nandi” (the sacred bull associated with Lord Shiva) from whose mouth natural water flows.

This running water adds to the temple’s mystical ambience.

The name “Jatashankar” combines two elements: “Jata” (meaning hair, referring to Lord Shiva’s matted locks) and “Shankar” (another name for Lord Shiva) 

In the temple’s vicinity, you’ll find three ponds, the water of which never runs out. The special thing that is said about these ponds is that the temperature of the water in these ponds is always opposite to the weather.

In winter, the water is warm, while in summer, it is cool. The water in these ponds never goes bad.

These ponds hold spiritual significance and are believed to have healing properties

Maharaja Chhatrasaal Museum

Maharaja Chhatrasaal Museum is located in the famous Dhubela Palace, just about 17 kilometres from Chhatarpur on the Chhatarpur-Naugaon road.

This palace is really special because it’s a great example of Bundelkhand architecture from the 18th century.

Maharaja Chhatrasal Bundella actually built it for himself to live in.

Guess what? The museum was inaugurated by none other than the first Prime Minister, Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru, back in 1955, specifically on the 12th of September.

Inside, there’s a treasure trove of archaeological finds from the Bundelkhand and Baghelkhand regions.

Raneh Falls

Matangeshwar Temple

Matangeshwar temple enshrines one of the largest Shivling in North India. This temple houses a yonipitham too, the Shivalingam here is finely polished.

This temple is a part of the Khajuraho group of monuments and hence a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Inscriptions in both Persian and Nagari scripts adorn the linga’s surface. Devotees perform Pradakshina by circumambulating the Yonipeetham on foot.

Considered the holiest of the Khajuraho temples, Matangeshwar Temple is the only temple of Khajuraho which is still worshipped.

This is no doubt one of the earliest temples of Khajuraho and is assignable to c.900-925 C.E. and built by King Harsha of the Chandela dynasty.

Panna National Park
